Executive Producer of Fannie Lou Hamer’s America Brings New Series about Black Women to BET Network

(March 1, 2019) WASHINGTON, D.C. – Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Keith Beauchamp, producer of the 2005 film, The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till and the upcoming film, Fannie Lou Hamer’s America, is bringing a new docu-series to BET HER this weekend that will recognize five courageous, inspiring and successful women who overcame great obstacles to achieve their dreams and goals.

The first season of the series, BET Her Presents: “Exceptional Black Women”, will feature Maxine Waters, Meagan Good, Terri J. Vaughn, Regina Hall and MC Lyte.  The series will premiere, Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 9 p.m. ET, with legendary lyricist, DJ, author, actress, entertainer and philanthropist MC Lyte, revealing her intimate stories of struggle, perseverance, and success in the music industry. She also recounts her journey from growing up in a single-parent home in Brooklyn, N.Y., to being the first female solo rapper nominated for a Grammy Award and so much more. First-hand accounts of MC Lyte’s struggles and challenges will come from her business partner Dr. Lynn Richardson and her mother, Constance Moorer.

Each half-hour episode will highlight one exceptional woman featuring never-before-seen photos, videos and intimate sit-down interviews, and explore how their stories of massive success transcend stereo types and prove the world wrong. How did they do it? What drove them? How did they rise through it all? This series of five unique portraits will answer those questions and more.

Over 200 years after the American Revolution and 60 - years after the Civil Rights movement, the black community, without question, continues to suffer mass discrimination. Black women largely suffer cruelly in this society from living in a country which remains both sexist and racist. Despite the obstacles and setbacks resulting from the intersecting dynamics of race, gender and other identities, black women have proven themselves incredibly resilient survivors. And in light of the current political climate, there has never been a better time to recognize the black woman for her dedication, perseverance and above all, for the many contributions she has given to humanity. BET HER Presents: “Exceptional Black Women” will do just that in honor of National Women's History Month.

"I'm truly excited to team up with BET networks to celebrate these beautiful and strong Black Women," said Beauchamp, the series executive producer and director. “At a time where women continue to fight for equal rights in our country, it's inspiring to recognize those who were able to overcome adversity and rise to great success. This series is empowering!"
